Two Former Galesburg Hotels Face Demolition
The Galesburg City Council has given the go-ahead to ready the wrecking ball for two former hotels.

Aldermen Monday night okayed demolition proceedings to begin against the former Super 8 hotel on West Main Street, and the former Regency on the city's far north side along Henderson Street. Both have been closed for years.

City Environmental Inspector Dedra Mannon says in the case of the Regency, the building really started to get into disrepair after the August 2007 wind storm. "The straight-line winds actually lifted up the roof over the pool area, and slammed it back down, breaking the glass in those windows," Mannon said. "In the pool area of the hotel, there's glass everywhere. So, the building is more dangerous now with the roof in the condition that it is above the pool."

Mannon says vandals frequent the Regency, which went into bankruptcy several years ago forcing its closure, and what's more, the basement frequently floods and needs to be pumped out.

As for the Super 8, she says, the building is in somewhat disrepair as well since it closed.

Demolition of both properties could cost the city nearly a half-million dollars.
