| Galesburg City Council Approves Facade Redevelopment Plan |
The Galesburg City Council has given the go-ahead for the formation of a program that will hopefully give buildings in the city's downtown a facelift.
Aldermen Monday night voted seven-to-one to create and put $100,000 into a Facade Redevelopment Grant Program, to be administered by a committee to be formed, consisting of members of the Galesburg Downtown Council, the city's Landmark Commission, and two at-large members.
If approved, applicants could receive $20,000 or more in grant money to rehab their buildings. Third Ward Alderman Russell Fleming says he likes the premise, but not how the money will be spent. "This is a $20,000 grant, up to that," Fleming said. "I have no problem with a $20,000 no-interest loan, but I'm against the grants."
Galesburg City Manager Dane Bragg says the $20,000 in city grant money may not be the only money available to those looking for it to rehab their facades. "The program could be combined with the (Galesburg Downtown Council's) facade development program, as well as the city's Revolving Loan Fund program, which could make available up to $60,000 for facade redevelopment projects."
The City Council would still get the final say on whether or not grants would be given for each project.
Aldermen Monday night also approved a number of vehicle or lawn mower purchases for various city departments, and a slight change in the city's new fourth Galesburg Transit Bus Route, which runs between Wal-Mart, Henderson Street, and downtown Galesburg into Knox College. |
