Fire Guts Rural Monmouth Home
A family is homeless after a fire destroyed their residence in Warren County early Tuesday morning.

Alexis Fire Protection Chief J.R. Lafferty says firefighters responded to the two-story house at 938 235th Avenue in rural Monmouth around 12:30 a-m to find fire coming out of the walls on the second level. He says four or five people, including a woman and children, escaped the residence unharmed. The adult residents of the home are listed as Dirk and Laura Hippen.

Lafferty says the house is probably a total loss. He says fire went through the roof, taking part of it down, and some floors burned through. Lafferty didn't have a dollar amount of the damage and he says the fire isn't considered suspicious, although a cause is not known at this time and the investigation continues.

Firefighers from Gerlaw assisted, and the Monmouth Fire Department hauled water to the scene. Lafftery says the crew from Alexis cleared around 5:30 a-m and responders from Gerlaw were there until around 6:30 Tuesday morning.
