Quinn Planning to Reopen Shuttered Historic Sites
The governor hopes to re-open historic sites during the next fiscal year, with only limited help from state lawmakers.

Governor Pat Quinn plans to merge the Historic Preservation Agency with the Department of Natural Resources, which can be done without a vote from lawmakers. DNR director Marc Miller says the merger will save money, perhaps even close to the amount necessary to re-open the sites.

Former Governor Rod Blagojevich closed a dozen historic sites and seven state parks in December in a cost-cutting move. The closures included the Carl Sandburg historic site in Galesburg and the Bishop state historic site in Henry County. Quinn reopened the parks last month. Miller says the merger makes sense, since the two agencies' missions are similar and used to be housed in the former Department of Conservation.

Quinn said the December closings meant Blagojevich was squeezing a nickel and losing a half dollar, which he said was bad government.
