| FIRST ON WGIL: Galesburg Man Guilty of Murder |
POSTED 11:15pm 3/25/09, UPDATED 12:53am 3/26/09 A local man who faced multiple felony charges has been found guilty on all charges after an alleged shooting at an area lounge last year.
A Knox County jury took over five hours to deliberate their verdict Wednesday evening, which found 32-year old Marlon Brown guilty on three counts of First Degree Murder, Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm, and two other felony weapon charges. Brown was accused of the alleged shooting and killing of 29-year old Deriek Lawless last August outside of Andrews Lounge on West Brooks Street.
Assistant State's Attorney Matthew Kwacala tells WGIL he's pleased with the verdict. "I think the jury made the right decision," Kwacala said. "I think this is a case of excellent work by the Galesburg Police Department, as well as the other crime scene investigators and crime techs. They put together a solid case, and we were able to put it all together in court, and I do believe that the right man was convicted today."
The prosecution wanted the jury to focus lab results as well as witness, and police investigator testimony while making there decision. Kwacala began his closing augment by describing Andrews Lounge as, "not a family restaurant - not an Applebees."
Kwacala says Brown could face anywhere from 20 to 60 years in prison resulting from the guilty verdict.
No sentencing date for Brown has been announced.
