Three Threatening Notes Found Thursday at WIU
UPDATED 12:20pm 3/26/09 Officials at Western Illinois University are again sounding alarm after now three threatening notes were found on campus.

The university has issued a Campus Alert after, the Office of Public Safety says, a threatening note was discovered around 7:30 Thursday morning in the university's Horrabin Hall in a lab, saying that there would be a terrible tragedy on campus Thursday.

OPS Director Bob Fitzgerald says while police were in the hall providing extra security, a second note was found. "They happened to be by one of the professor's offices, when the professor opened his office up...and they found another note that was similar to the first. It said 'people will perish on campus 3-26-09,'" Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald says neither note specified the nature of the threats, but that they're being analyzed by analysts with the Illinois State Police.

Since then, the university says, a third threatening note was found on a restroom stall in Stipes Hall. Fitzgerald has issued a statement saying that he's concerned about copycat activities.

He says the campus remains open and classes are being held, and the police presence has been heightened with extra patrols being provided by Macomb and Illinois State Police, along with the McDonough County Sheriffs Department.

WIU President Al Goldfarb has issued a statement saying that whoever wrote the notes, if found, will be prosecuted.
