War Vets Could Get Jobs with State Police
It could soon be easier for Iraq and Afghanistan veterans to get jobs with the Illinois State Police. Under a bill proposed by State Sen. Deanna Demuzio (D-Carlinville), those who have served at least 30 consecutive days overseas, or 60 non-consecutive days, would be able to have their two-year college education requirement waived.

Demuzio says that doesn't mean potential police officers would be unqualified, as they would go through the same interview process and training as all the other officers.

A similar bill passed the Senate last year, but got caught up on technical problems in a house committee. Demuzio says she has fixed those problems, including specifics about what veterans are eligible. Those who have served in Iraq or Afghanistan from the start date of those wars to present day are eligible.

The bill passed the Senate unanimously and now goes to the House.
