Mikhail Gorbachev Speaks at Reagan's Alma Mater
Only one American president was born in Illinois -- Ronald Reagan. His alma mater, Eureka College, hosted Reagan's Soviet contemporary, Mikhail Gorbachev, Friday afternoon. Gorbachev toured the Reagan Peace Garden on campus and addressed a convocation which a college official estimated to be a crowd of 800.

Gorbachev, speaking through an interpreter, gave his thoughts on working with Reagan in the days of perestroika and glasnost -- governmental restructuring and political openness. Gorbachev recalled he was initially unimpressed by Reagan's call to "tear down this wall," knowing that "President Reagan's initial career was as an actor."

The event was intended to draw attention to the college's Ronald W. Reagan Society, which held a fund-raising dinner featuring Gorbachev in Peoria Friday.
