FIRST ON WGIL: Knox County United Way Reaches Goal, Despite Recession
POSTED 8:05am 3/28/09 Even in an economic downturn, local residents and business people sure do know how to give so that other organizations can continue to help.

That's according to the Executive Director of the Knox County United Way. Ann Tucker says the 2008-2009 fundraising campaign has hit its $360,000 goal, and has exceeded it by over $8,000.

Tucker tells WGIL she admits she was worried about whether or not this year's campaign would hit its goal. "The campaign started out really strong, and we were extremely positive," Tucker said. "Then the economy, well, definitely did take a turn for the worse, so we figured it was going to be, probably, a little more difficult than in the past to raise some funds."

But Tucker says businesses and the community really stepped up and came through - not just for the United Way, but also for the 23 partner agencies and the 32 programs they put out. Those agencies are already getting funds monthly from the United Way.

In a prepared statement, United Way President Ken Hutchenrider says he's "proud of our community for their giving spirit."
