Monmouth College Student Newspaper Wins Awards
Members of the editorial staff of Monmouth College's student newspaper, The Courier, have received three awards from the Illinois College Press Association (ICPA).

The Courier received a first-place honor in the headline writing competition for "New Campus Sidewalks: Making Monmouth College More Concrete," and an honorable mention in sports photography for a Monmouth-Ripon football game photo taken by Ryne Tate, a senior from Springfield.

Competing in the open division, which includes student newspapers of all sizes, The Courier had a second-place entry in the film review category for a piece written by Lucas Gorham, a winter graduate from Elmwood. Gorham reviewed Bill Maher's "Religulous," and one judge wrote, "Gutsy review. You gave your opinion and backed it up."

The awards, presented last month in Chicago during the annual convention of the ICPA, were part of the 2008 Awards for Excellence in Illinois College Newspapers competition.

"I am really proud of my staff and their accomplishment," said The Courier's editor, junior Lucas Pauley of Oregon, Ill.

Founded in 1983, the ICPA has 42 member colleges and universities throughout Illinois. Its purpose is to stimulate greater interest and development in journalism and to raise the standards of journalism among its member institutions.
