Gov. Quinn Ready to Battle for His State Police Pick
Gov. Pat Quinn says he is ready for a fight in the Illinois Senate over his pick for Illinois State Police director.

Twenty-nine-year-old Jonathon Monken was appointed by Quinn earlier this week to take over the director position from Larry Trent. Since the appointment, lawmakers in Springfield have spoken out, concerned that Monken, an Army veteran, does not have civilian police experience. The voices grew after a scathing audit that revealed that the State Police forensic lab had been undefended and is behind on tests, including DNA tests.

Speaking to reporters in Chicago, Quinn said he is confident that Monken can and will handle the tasks at hand.

Quinn, who says the State Police need "a good quarterback," has no doubt that the State Police need an overhaul. He says he is not only concerned about the recent audit that showed more than 14,000 backlogged lab cases, but also about the State Police allegedly not cooperating with Freedom of Information Act requests and with court orders.
