Better Business Bureau: Bad Economy, More Scams
With hard economic times, many people are looking to make a buck and will try to do so unscrupulously, according to the Better Business Bureau.

Steve Bernas, president and CEO, Better Business Bureau of Chicago and Northern Illinois, says information is the one commodity in these tough times that retains its value. He says consumer must stay ahead of the scammers by staying informed about the latest scams.

The BBB has some tips for consumers:

* Three Bid Rule: Obtain three bids and carefully compare them before you begin construction or any type of work on your home or business.

* Check Them Out: Check out a business before you spend money on any product or service. Go to www.bbb.org and check out the Reliability Report page.

* Signing Contracts: Never sign any contract that has blank spots or contains incomplete information about the work to be accomplished.

* Don't Pay to Work: Jobs that typically require you to make some type of payment up front before work begins are typically scams.

* Shred it: Shred all documents that contain any financial information.

The "For Consumers" section of the BBB website provides hundreds of specific tips.
