State Elections Office Budget Likely to be Cut
The men and women who run the state agencies in Illinois will have to get used to hearing the word "No." The chairman of a House appropriations committee told the head of the Illinois State Board of Elections there likely will be a "substantial cut" in next year's budget, compared to the current year. Elections board executive director Dan White had asked for a 1.1 percent increase to this year’s roughly $100 million budget.

White says it’s difficult when he's required to implement new programs, such as a campaign disclosure web site, when there is not more money coming in. White did say after testifying to the House Appropriations for General Services Committee that "I think we'll be in substantial compliance. We’re working on that web site, but if we don't get funding for it, probably what's going to happen is that web site will take longer to get up and running to the capacity it should be."

On another note, White told the committee many people took advantage of early voting, but turnout numbers of about 72 percent suggest to him that the early voters were people who probably would have voted anyway.
