Different Versions of Law to Increase Truck Speed Limits Passed
Illinois is a "speed bump" for long-haul truckers, according to lawmakers who support raising the speed limit for the big rigs.

Right now cars can travel 65 miles per hour on most of the state's interstate highway miles. But trucks are limited to 55 -- and backers say Illinois is one of just three states in the nation holding to that.

Advocates say everyone's safer when everyone's going the same speed. Detractors point out enforcement could be a lot stronger as it is, and perhaps that should be addressed before anyone thinks about raising the speed limit.

A Senate version of the bill to raise the truck speed limit to 65 does not restrict the truck speed limit to 55 in the "collar counties" around Chicago . The House version does.

H.B. 3956 has passed the House, 77-35.

S.B. 1467 has passed the Senate, 38-14-2.
