Officials Looking Into Cost of City-Wide Trash Services for Abingdon
Officials in Abingdon are following up on a request from the public that came out of a meeting last month to go over a proposed city-wide trash pick-up service.

The meeting on February 23rd at the Abingdon Banking Center was intended to provide information about the proposal and answer questions. One part that wasn't clear was how much the service would cost despite ballpark figures given by representatives from two companies interested in providing service to the city. Those figures ranged from $15 to $20 a month.

Abingdon residents currently subscribe to whatever service they want. Some don't have any service, and city officials believe that's partly responsible for a problem of trash accumulating on certain properties in town. Aldermen last fall began discussing the possibility of city-wide pick-up and other related services, but were met with stiff resistance. The council then opted to put the matter up for a vote in April.

Mayor Steve Darmer tells WGIL the city is trying to work out the issue of how much it might cost to subscribe to a city-wide service before voters head to the polls.

"What we're going to try to do is get some preliminary figures out to the public before they vote. We know what we want done, so we just need to know an estimate of the cost, some kind of range that would really help people make up their minds."

Darmer says he hopes to have some numbers to pass along before the next city council meeting on the 16th of this month.
