Gas Prices Rise in March
The month of March brought with it higher gas prices.

The Triple-A Chicago Motor Club's monthly survey puts the statewide average at $2.01 a gallon, up nine cents compared to February. Prices locally are a little higher than that, and Triple-A predicts gas prices will continue the upward trend in the coming months as vacationers head to their destinations and the switch is made to summer fuel blends.

However, Triple-A spokeswoman Nicole Niemi says gasoline prices will not be exorbitant this year. "I think it's highly unlikely that we'll hit $4 or higher this year," Niemi said. "Oil prices have been creeping up, especially in these past few weeks, so we're seeing a little bit of an increase at the gas pump as well. But it should stabilize and maintain these levels, much lower than we were a year ago."

The price last year at this time was $3.26 a gallon. Niemi says when the price topped the $4 a gallon mark last year, demand dropped, and because of other economic conditions, it hasn't recovered.

Gas stations in Galesburg are charging about $2.07 a gallon for their least expensive unleaded.
