Knoxville School Board Eyeing Possible Expansion to Meet Growing Student Enrollment
The Knoxville School Board seems pretty much united on the fact that something has to be done to expand Mabel Woolsey Elementary School and address a surprising uptick in class size, but just how to do it is still up in the air.

The board was presented with two options during a special board meeting Wednesday night---either expand and build a permanent structure on campus containing as many as four extra classrooms or get that same space out of portable classrooms.

District 202 Superintendent Larry Carlton says building new would cost upwards of 2-million dollars, and therein lies the problem.

"You're looking at $244,000 annually, that's for actually 12 years. Working on the budget for next year I cannot sit here and tell you yet that we have an additional $244,000 in our existing budget."

Purchasing portable classrooms, Carlton says, would put the cost at 3-million dollars, with interest, he says that would be about $159,000 a year for the next 12 years. And that, Carlton says, is, quote, "doable."

The board will discuss the matter more at their regular meeting in two weeks. But at least one board member suggested that teachers need to be involved in the process, so that they're getting what they need if any expansion is approved.
