Newspaper Editor: Local Leaders Not Doing Enough Leading
A session hosted by the City of Galesburg focused primarily on what's positive, but at least one person suggested one thing that seems, to him, to be anything but positive.

Register-Mail Editor Tom Martin was a panelist during the first of six "community visioning" sessions being held over consecutive Thursday nights. The topic was, in part, image, and Martin said local media outlets do play an important role in Galesburg's image, even though reporters must report on the bad as well as the good.

Leadership was also discussed, and how that plays into image. And Martin says if you want leadership, you might not find much of it in local government these days.

"These are exceptional times, and I have not seen exceptional leadership from our governmental units," Martin said. "I think in most respects, they're doing the things that have always been done. I think more needs to be demanded of them. I think the fact that we have nine candidates for mayor shows that people feel like we need some leadership in Galesbug, and maybe they don't see it."

Martin says that, to him, also applies to the Knox County Board.

But that wasn't all the discussion about leadership. Some wondered if part of the problem is that there may not be enough leaders in the area, given how some say all the same people are involved in all the same boards, commissions, city councils, and the like.
