Free Transit Rides Face Uncertain Future
State Rep. Suzie Bassi (R-Palatine) says Illinois is in a lot of financial trouble, and roughly 400,000 seniors across Illinois are to blame. They're the ones who have signed up for the free ride program offered by the Regional Transit Authority, a program which Bassi says threatens the future of mass transit.

Bassi sponsored House Bill 2657, which she reluctantly withdrew once she realized she wouldn't have enough support to send the bill back to the house floor for debate. But she says that doesn't mean the bill won't resurface in the future.

Bassi says her bill wouldn’t have taken free rides away from low income seniors or those with disabilities. She says she wanted to sponsor this bill because a lot of her older constituents called her and complained, saying they wanted to pay for their fares and didn't want to be seen as abusing the free ride program.
