Change Your Clocks and Smoke Detector Batteries Tonight
Officials with the Galesburg Fire Department are sounding their annual call for you to do one more thing when you "spring forward" this weekend.

Daylight Savings Time begins early Sunday morning -- which means, as always, officials recommend setting your clocks one hour ahead before you go to bed Saturday night. But firefighters say if you've got battery-operated smoke detectors, you should also take a minute and change the batteries as well.

Galesburg Fire Prevention Captain Dan Foley tells WGIL it's also a prime time to see just how old your smoke detector is, for good reason.

"This would be a time to check and see if there's a date on your (smoke) detector," Foley said. "If there's no date, then it was manufactured more than 10 years ago, because they started putting dates on the detectors 10 years ago. So, we suggest you change out the entire smoke detector if it has no date or is more than 10 years old."

Foley says smoke detector batteries should be replaced every six months, but detectors should be tested at least once a month. He says many hard-wired smoke detectors have battery back-ups, and those should be checked, too.

Foley also recommends testing and checking the batteries in any carbon monoxide detectors in your home, if they're separate from your smoke detector.
