FIRST ON WGIL: Galesburg Livestock Sales Closes; Thefts Suspected
POSTED 2:56 p-m 3/1/10 An agricultural business that was open for nearly six decades has ceased operations, and there are reports that a major theft is the reason.

A now former employee of Galesburg Livestock Sales on Knox Highway 9 says the business shut down Monday. The employee, who asked to not be identified, says the staff was told last week that the business would be closing and they were losing their jobs. A suspected theft of cattle worth at least $2-million from Galesburg Livestock Sales, which was open for close to 60 years, is apparently the reason for the closure.

A message left with Galesburg Livestock Sales owner Dick Anderson has not yet been returned and calls to the business phone number are met with a busy signal. The unnamed employee believes there were four full-time employees and 15 part-timers working at the business when it closed.

Knox County Sheriff David Clague and Warren County Sheriff Martin Edwards Monday said their offices had not received any theft complaints from the rural Galesburg business. There are, however, numerous unconfirmed reports that the theft occurred.

Galesburg Livestock Sales, 1714 Knox Highway 9, closed its doors Monday, according to an employee who worked there. Numerous reports allege more than $2-million worth of cattle was stolen from the business, which led to its closure.
