Bridge Replacement Requires Railroad Agreement
The City of Galesburg and the local railroad are apparently partnering on a project that will result in the replacement of a bridge near downtown Galesburg.

The Galesburg City Council is holding a special meeting Monday night, where aldermen will consider agreements with both the Illinois Department of Transportation and Burlington Northern Santa Fe for the replacement of the Cedar Creek Bridge at South Henderson Street.

City officials say the agreements are needed, in part, because three flashing railroad signals will be removed, and replaced once the bridge work is done.

They say the median on the south side of the tracks will be raised, which would help it confirm with quiet zone regulations, assuming the city's long planed quiet zone designations are approved.

The City is spending $70,000 on the bridge work, but only $14,000 of that will be paid by the city through gas tax funds, with the rest coming from the federal government.

Aldermen Monday night will also consider the new contract with the city's police officers. As we previously reported, the deal is retroactive to last year, and includes 3.25% pay raises for three years, going back to January of 2009.

The special Galesburg City Council meeting starts at 5:30 at City Hall.
