Farming Costs May Ease Up After Challenging 2009
FORREST, Ill. (AP) -- Last year, fertilizer prices were extremely high for the acres of corn and soybeans Dennis Haab farms north of the central Illinois community of Forrest.

And then a year of soggy weather meant he had to pay to have his wet crop dried to market-friendly levels. Haab is president of the Livingston County Farm Bureau, and he says the situation meant his income took a hit.

This year, the high costs of farming are expected to ease _ with spring planting fast approaching. For many farmers, that means the roller-coaster effect on their income will continue, from highs in 2007 and 2008 to a tough 2009.

The Illinois Farm Business Farm Management co-op group says central Illinois farmers are expected to see total direct costs fall by an average of 29 percent per acre on corn and 17 percent on beans.
