Health Department Could Weather State Budget Storm
To hear officials with the Knox County Health Department tell it, whatever happens with the state budget might not have much of an impact on the Knox County Health Department.

Administrator Heidi Britton told the Knox County Board of Health Thursday night from what she heard, while overall, the Illinois Department of Public Health Budget is expected to take a slight cut in Governor Pat Quinn's proposal, funding for things like the Local Health Protection Grant and the Illinois Breast and Cervical Cancer Program look to be flat.

Britton says, though, that's not to suggest she isn't concerned about what COULD be in the state budget.

"If they make those flat-funded, then other things will have to be decreased," Britton said. "As you know, there's been talk of the 14% decrease in funding for FY11 -- if and only if there isn't a state income tax increase. We're not out of the woods yet, but at least this...kind of, felt a little good for this week."

Britton says even if the Knox County Health Department has to take somewhat of a hit in terms of state funding, it should be fine, because some cash reserves have been building up.

The Knox County Board of Health Thursday night did vote to raise a number of various fees for vaccinations and other services the health department provides, Britton says, as a way of bring those fees closer to in line with what it costs the department to administer them.
