State Offers Generator Safety Tips
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The Illinois State Fire Marshal's office is offering tips for safely using electric generators as we head into the spring storm season.

As storms down trees and power lines, people turn to generators to keep lights on and appliances running.

According to the fire marshal's office, the most common dangers involving generators are carbon monoxide poisoning, electrical shock or electrocution, and fire hazards.

Officials suggest using generators in well-ventilated places away from doors, windows and vent openings. And generators should be placed so that exhaust fumes can't enter the home.

Homeowners are also encouraged to install battery-operated carbon monoxide alarms that will sound if any vapors enter the home.

Appliances should be plugged directly into the generator.
