Durbin Talks About Unemployment Benefits Running Out
Federal unemployment benefits are running out.

The federal benefits are the extended benefits, on top of the 26 weeks the state provides to those who are out of work and looking for a job. U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) says 15,000 Illinoisans lost their benefits at the start of the month because Congress didn't authorize an extension. That number will grow to 65,000 by the end of the month if the matter isn’t resolved by then.

Durbin says the extension is needed because finding a job is so difficult now, and job-seekers are experiencing long-term unemployment.

Durbin blames one senator, Jim Bunning (R-Ky.), for blocking a bill to extend benefits. He says the Senate might be able to overcome his objection by the end of the week or early next week.
