State Working on Red Light Camera Compromise
A compromise on red light cameras is in the works at the Statehouse. An Illinois Senate sub-committee Monday will begin considering the details hammered out last week by lawmakers, police officials, motorists, and opponents of the cameras.

State Sen. Martin Sandoval (D-Chicago), chairman of the Senate Transportation Sub-Committee on Red Light Cameras, says the compromise language will address many of the concerns about the cameras and the tickets they generate. He says the changes will include:

* A uniform length of time for yellow lights, as currently required Downstate by the Illinois Department of Transportation

* A mandatory review of all potential violations by a police officer, or by a traffic management specialist in Chicago

* Clarification of where a motorist can stop when preparing to turn right on red.

The primary opponent of the cameras, State Sen. Dan Duffy (R-Lake Barrington), still hopes for a ban on the cameras, but says he's fine with uniform standards for now. He does say he was surprised to find executives from the camera companies in the compromise meeting, saying the cameras are supposed to be "all about safety" and not about what they can do for the camera companies.
