Lawmakers Want to End Nuclear Power-Related Ban
Lawmakers want to end a 23-year ban on the construction of new nuclear power in Illinois. A bill to repeal the ban, sponsored by State Sen. Mike Jacobs (D-East Moline), passed the State Senate Monday.

State Sen. Jeff Schoenberg (D-Evanston) was the only lawmaker that voted against the measure. He says the state should focus on green technology like wind and solar power. He says both those avenues would create jobs for Illinois.

Jacobs believes lifting the ban could bring federal dollars to the state. Georgia was recently given $8 billion to build a new nuclear plant, and Jacobs says that could have been Illinois.

S.B. 3388 now goes the House. The Senate vote was 40-1.
