Women's Group Urges Tax Reform
A letter has been sent to top legislators in Springfield urging them to pass a tax reform package.

The letter, signed by 225 women from all walks of life, voices concern that without a "comprehensive tax reform package," revenue to "vital services" supported by the state will be cut.

The coalition of women say they support the framework laid out by House Bill 174, which calls for an income tax increase as well as broadening the sales tax to include services such as hair styling and tattoo services.

State Rep. Elaine Nekritz (D-Northbrook) is one of the women who signed the letter. When asked how she could convince other lawmakers that a tax increase is necessary, she said as the voices of concerned citizens grow, lawmakers eventually must listen.

Gov. Pat Quinn has pushed for a tax increase since taking office. His recent budget proposal calls for deep cuts to state services and cuts to education funding unless a tax increase is enacted. Top Republicans won't talk about a tax hike until other major spending reforms are made, and many lawmakers would rather nor vote on the issue ahead of the November election.
