Popular Programs Among Proposed Ag Cuts
A popular horse race at the DuQuoin State Fair is being cut by Gov. Pat Quinn. As part of proposing $2 billion in additional budget cuts, state agencies were asked to find places to slice, and the Illinois Department of Agriculture has chosen the World Trotting Derby.

State Agriculture Director Tom Jennings says he picked the derby because out-of-state horses usually win, which means the purse money doesn't stay in Illinois. He says he'd rather continue races that have more Illinois winners. Jennings says overall, he'd like the governor to win a 33 percent income tax hike, in the hopes that the governor would restore some of the cuts to agriculture programs.

Meanwhile, Illinois Farm Bureau members are meeting with state lawmakers to go over budget cuts, and how to prevent them. IFB board member Jim Shielein of Dixon hopes lawmakers will increase fees in 23 services areas within the department so that those services will continue. He cites extension services, gas pump inspections and meat inspections as areas that need more money to continue service.
