St. Pat DUI Drivers "Luck Will Run Out"
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Illinois officials warn that there will be little luck of the Irish for those who drive drunk this St. Patrick's Day.

The Illinois Department of Transportation says police across the state plan to put extra patrols on the roads today. They'll also set up checkpoints to crack down on drivers who choose to drink and drive.

IDOT urges would-be revelers to drink responsibly and also to designate a sober driver before heading out to celebrate.

Federal accident figures from 2008 indicate 37 percent of drivers involved in fatal crashes on St. Pat's Day were legally drunk. That is, they had a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.08 or above.

IDOT Secretary Gary Hannig cautions that "your luck will run out if you're caught drinking and driving."
