Police Practice Drug Searches in Downtown Galesburg
If you traveled through downtown Galesburg during the lunch hour Tuesday, you might have noticed a number of squad cars with K-9 units. A Galesburg Police official says there was nothing to be alarmed about.

Police Captain Lindsey May says a number of area agencies gathered at the former Cherry Street restaurant and bar Tuesday for what was drug investigation training.

May tells WGIL officers and their dogs went through the building.

"They'll hide drugs or they'll hide individuals and they'll search them, like in an actual real-life incident where they're searching for an individual -- a suspect -- or searching for drugs, so it plays out real," May said.

Police officers from Galesburg, Canton, and other areas all got their chances to do searches in the building, and May tells WGIL they do that quite often in various settings.

"Area officers train monthly," May said. "They'll come together, and they'll have it in Galesburg or they'll have it in some of the other communities. It's a good learning experience, not only for the handlers, but for the dogs themselves."

May says the K-9 officers and their dogs get 16 hours of training a month.

Cherry Street Restaurant and Bar closed in July of last year. It's not clear what, if anything, the pub will be used for in the future.
