Chamber's Teacher of the Year Named
The choir director at Galesburg High School admits she was tricked, but given why, she might not have had it any other way.

The Galesburg-Area Chamber of Commerce Wednesday named Carolyn Kellert its Teacher of the Year at the monthly "Galesburg on the Go" Breakfast.

Kellert is celebrating her 25th year at GHS, and tells WGIL thanks to the person who nominated her -- GHS Assistant Principal Brett Wolfe -- she thought she might be doing more giving than receiving at the breakfast.

"Brett Wolfe had asked me last week if it would be a possibility that myself and my husband could come to this breakfast," Kellert said, "and he said, 'They're pretty well going to be picking your brains about fine arts and how that would related in the community.' I asked him, 'Do I need to prepare anything?' He said, 'No, don't worry about it.'"

Kellert says she never did realize she was winning an award until her name was called, and that when it did happen she was "absolutely stunned." She says there are so many teachers deserving of such an award, and she hopes her winning it speaks well of the fine arts in general.

Kellert conducts the Chamber, Accapella, and Concert Choirs, and is also responsible for putting together the annual Galesburg High School Madrigal Dinner.
