Proposed Motorcycle Helmet Law Fails
Citing statistics about the number and cost of teenagers' motorcycle accidents, an Illinois state senator hoped to win a mandate for helmets for teenagers. But it didn't work.

The measure to require youth under the age of 18 to wear a motorcycle helmet failed by a 19-32 vote. The most vocal opponent was State Sen. Gary Forby (D-Benton), a motorcycle rider who said, "This is still the USA , isn't it?" He added, "I don't want anybody in this audience telling me how to raise my kids."

Bill sponsor and fellow motorcycle rider State Sen. Donne Trotter (D-Chicago) says 6 percent of brain injuries are the result of motorcycle accidents, and says taxpayers pay millions in health care costs for those injuries that could be prevented by wearing a helmet.
