Madigan Wants Quinn to Have Influence Over Lt. Gov. Pick
The candidates for the Democratic nomination for lieutenant governor will make their cases to party leaders on Saturday.

Illinois House Speaker Mike Madigan (D-Chicago), the state Democratic chairman, says he wants to let Gov. Pat Quinn exert most of the influence over the selection. Quinn isn't saying whether he has any preference yet.
"It's a democratic process," he said. "It's open. I think it's very healthy that a lot of people have indicated their personal interest, over 200, so I think that's a good sign that a lot of people want to run on our ticket, and I think we're gonna win."

There's a vacancy on the ballot because Scott Lee Cohen, who won the primary last month, withdrew over domestic battery allegations.

Quinn says State Rep. Arthur L. Turner (D-Chicago) is in the mix, having finished second in the primary. He also spoke highly of Sheila Simon, a former member of the Carbondale City Council and daughter of the late U.S. Sen. Paul Simon. He also said that some of the unknowns among the 200 who have applied have a shot.

The actual decision will be made March 27 by the Democratic State Central Committee, whose members are elected by Democratic primary voters.
