Orpheum Theatre Support Growing
The Orpheum Theatre in Galesburg continues to get more and more support from organizations looking to help the theatre fix some of its more pressing needs, even after a federal economic stimulus grant application to that end was rejected.

Theatre president Kate Francis says a Choral Dynamics veterans-themed show to be held in June at the theatre called "Welcome Home: A Tribute to Heroes" will be a fundraiser for the Orpheum, with all proceeds going to the theatre's capital campaign.

Francis tells WGIL before that, though, there are two other ways people can help raise money for the theatre.

"In the near term, in April, Innkeepers Coffee is supporting the Orpheum Theatre through a percentage of sales from their Innkeepers' Blend Coffee," Francis said. "All through the month of April, if people buy one pound of Innkeepers coffee...10 percent (of the proceeds) will be donated to the Orpheum Theatre. Also in April, Monmouth College is staging a concert version of "Sweeney Todd" on Friday, April 9."

Francis says since the Orpheum went public with its struggles to essentially replace heating and air conditioning systems and make other improvements to the theatre, despite being rejected for a "Save America's Teasures" Grant, the support has been overwhelming.

The Civic Center Authority Board will have a special meeting at the end of the month to go over bids for a performance contract agreement with firms that could make the theatre more environmentally friendly while saving money.
