IL Dems Hold Auditions for Lt. Governor
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Seventeen applicants to be the Democratic nominee for Illinois lieutenant governor survived Saturday's initial screening process.

Audition day Saturday in the Illinois Democratic Party brought out a used-car salesman, veteran legislators and an expert on bat houses.

In presentations to party leaders some argued that they have the government know-how a state official needs. Others stressed their business experience. Some made the case that they understand the interests and worries of regular voters.

The original nominee for lieutenant governor, Scott Lee Cohen, dropped out after allegations of domestic abuse, steroid use and failure to pay child support.

The Democratic Central Committee will pick a replacement nominee next Saturday.
