Lawmaker Wants Government Contract Changes
A state lawmaker says he has found a way to save more money. State Sen. Dan Kotowski (D-Park Ridge) is pushing his measure that would clamp down on the number of sole-source contracts used by state government.

Kotowski says too often, a contract that isn't bid is extended or renewed with no further evaluation. His measure would stop agencies from entering any further sole-source contracts if the total cost -- including extensions and renewals -- would total $249,999 or more. It would also require any current sole-source contracts to be reviewed before being extended or renewed.

Kotowski says Connecticut recently enacted a similar effort, and it saved that state more than $1 million. He says taxpayers want to know that their dollars are being used wisely, and that this legislation would help ensure that.
