Saturday is Selection Day for Lt. Gov. Nominee
Selection day for a new Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor is Saturday, but Gov. Pat Quinn says he'll state a preference before then.

There are 17 candidates left in the Democratic derby for lieutenant governor, after a round of eliminations last weekend. Five are members of the General Assembly. The governor, who expects to exert a lot of influence over the pick, says he hasn't decided on which one is his favorite. Each will provide more information to the governor and party leaders. "I'll have my opinion by the end of the week, certainly, about this, and there'll be a vote this Saturday," Quinn said.

That vote will be by the Democratic State Central Committee, which will meet in Springfield.

A leading contender now appears to be State Sen. Susan Garrett (D-Lake Forest), whom Quinn praised as "a real leader in ethics."

The vacancy was created when the winner of the primary in February, Scott Lee Cohen, dropped out of the race over revelations of domestic violence.

The 17 Candidates Are:

State Rep. Mike Boland (D-East Moline )
Thomas Carroll
Megan Drilling
Dirk Enger
James Farrell
State Sen. Susan Garrett ( D-Lake Forest )
State Sen. David Koehler (D-Peoria)
Dean Koldenhoven
Raja Krishnamoorthi
Lori Koziana
State Sen. Iris Martinez (D-Chicago)
Spiridoula Mavrothalasitis
Paul Park
Jay Rehak
Jasper St. Angel
Sheila Simon
State Rep. Arthur L. Turner (D-Chicago)
