Group Helping Disabled Concerned About State Budget
"Every day is really a struggle." That's how the Executive Director of the Knox County Council on Developmental Disabilities describes the situation at her organization these days, even before Governor Pat Quinn made his budget proposal.

Mary Crittendon says the state already owed KCCDD money even before Quinn announced a proposed $276 million in human service organization cuts, which has meant using lines of credit in order to make ends meet.

But Crittendon tells WGIL's "Galesburg Live" that money certainly can't be used forever.

"Sooner or later, if something doesn't happen, we won't be able to continue to have those lines of credit," Crittendon said. "Right now, it's really tricky because there's so much uncertainty that we really can't say what it's going to look like. We really don't know what's going to happen. There's so much going on. Right now, we're continuing to put one foot in front of the other."

KCCDD provides, among other things, vocational skills to those with disabilities through things like Phoenix Industries and others.

Crittendon says seeking ISO status -- meaning, the adoption of an international set of standards for product manufacturing -- has helped minimize the loss of some of its business and even get some new business, but she says she needs the state budget crisis to be solved and quick.
