| Monmouth-Roseville Lays Off 85; Up to 56 Could Be Recalled |
The Monmouth-Roseville School Board has made jobs cuts that are largely tied to the deficit reduction plan the board adopted earlier in the month, resulting in two elementary schools being closed.
The District-238 board Tuesday night voted to reduce nearly 90 positions due either to uncertain grant funding, uncertain enrollment, or cost containment. Superintendnet Paul Woehlke says a total of 13 teachers are being reduced, while another is being cut from full-time to part-time. One principal has been let go, nine coaches are also being let go, and over 50 support staff members are being cut as well, with one of those also being reduced to part-time.
Woehlke tells WGIL the good news is that the support staff jobs have a chance at coming back.
"Many of those will be recalled for next school year," Woehlke said. "But they are related to jobs like cafeteria worker, bus or playground monitor, non-instructional aide...the support tasks, if you will, of keeping the building running."
Woehlke says most of the support staff will be called back once schedules and other needs are sorted out now that Roseville Elementary School and Willits Primary School in Monmouth will be closing, and the remaining elementary buildings will become grade-based attendance centers.
The district, by the way, is still working on a transportation plan for next school year because of the changes as well.
The District-238 board is cutting over $1.5 million out of its budget because of the state budget situation. |
