Exhibit Details Escape of Curious George's Writers
SKOKIE, Ill. (AP) -- There's a harrowing real-life tale behind the beloved children's book character Curious George. It's on display in a new exhibit opening at the Illinois Holocaust Museum in Skokie.

The creators of the mischievous monkey were German Jews and artists Margaret and H.A. Rey. They were living in France when the German Army invaded in World War II. The Reys fled on bicycle to Spain, with manuscripts that were the basis for the Curious George stories.

Their escape was the subject of a 2005 children's book. The exhibit opening Friday will feature illustrations from that book and other information about the Reys' journey.

The exhibit runs through June 20 at the Skokie museum.
