Complications With School Closures in Monmouth-Roseville
The closure of two elementary buildings in the Monmouth-Roseville School District is now presenting its own set of problems -- or, at least, things the district needs to work through before the fall.

District-238 Superintendent Paul Woehlke told the Monmouth-Roseville School Board Tuesday night now that Roseville Elementary School and Willits Primary School in Monmouth have been determined to be closed in order to help cut one-point-five million dollars in costs, leaving the other elementary schools to become grade-based attendance centers, other things need to be done.

For one, Woehlke says bus routes are still being figured out, which will also help figure out start times for each school. But for another, Woehlke tells WGIL the district will have to absorb another cost.

"Because we...are closing Roseville Elementary, we will now, next fall, need to start serving breakfast at the Junior High in Roseville, which we haven't done before," Woehlke said. "That has an impact on the timing of when we want students to arrive at the building, which has an impact on transportation."

Speaking of breakfast, Woehlke says breakfast will now have to be served at Monmouth-Roseville High School this fall, because the number of students who qualify for free or reduced lunches will have crossed a threshold.

The transportation issue should be figured out in the next couple of months.
