Collective Bargaining With County Workers Complete
The Knox County Board last month ratified a four-year contract with employees who work at the Knox County Courthouse, and Wednesday night, they took the next step in that agreement.

Board members Wednesday unanimously voted to approve a collective bargaining agreement with Local 3217 of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees. As we reported earlier this month, the four-year contract retroactive to this past December calls for a 3.5% raise the first year, a 4% raise the second year, and 2.5% raises the last two years.

AFSCME Staff Representative Randy Lynch tells WGIL the 20 employees this deal covers are pretty pleased.

"The membership passed it. It ratified well," Lynch said.

Even in a tight budget time due in part to the state budget situation, Knox County Treasurer Robin Davis tells WGIL it's a contract the county can afford.

"At this point in time, the county can afford it," Davis said. "But more than that, it keeps all the (county employee) contracts equal."

Lynch says that would make the contract similar to one approved late last year with the Knox County Sheriffs Department deputies.

The contract covers employees of the Knox County Clerk, Treasurer, and others.
