Tight School Budgets Equal Field Trip Cuts
BLOOMINGTON, Ill. (AP) -- About 600 third-graders from various McLean County schools will head to Wildlife Prairie State Park on a Conservation Day field trip in Bloomington next month.

But about 400 third-graders from Normal-based Unit Five won't be there.

Some school districts are reeling from delays in state transportation payments and they've been forced to slash spending on buses for field trips.

And that has a domino effect. Organizations that offer the destinations of those trips may have to readjust their budgets and change how they carry out their educational missions.

Paula Wager is education coordinator for the McLean County Soil and Water Conservation District, and she says field trip cuts have a big impact. For her agency, it means an increase in the per-student cost of Conservation Day -- which has a $3,000 price tag regardless of attendance.
