Gas Prices Soar in March
The price of gas in the state is now about a dollar more a gallon than last year at this time.

The AAA Chicago Motor Club's Fuel Gauge Report shows the statewide average for March is $2.97 a gallon, up 24 cents compared to last month's average. The Illinois average is around 10 cents more than the cost of the least expensive gallon of regular unleaded sold at most Galesburg fueling stations.

AAA spokeswoman Beth Mosher says a couple of factors are driving up the price of gas.

"We have very, very high oil prices for this time of year," Mosher said. "The midwest is seeing very, very high wholesale prices -- which then, in turn, pushes the retail prices up."

Mosher says other factors are rising demand for gas. She says demand typically starts to rise this time of year and really takes off closer to late spring and early summer, so we haven't seen the worst of it yet.

Mosher predicts gas prices will continue to go up as demand rises through the spring and as refineries switch to their summer formulations.

Gas prices last March averaged $2.05 a gallon.
