CSC Awards Faculty, Adjunct Faculty of the Year
Vickie Culbertson, full-time Carl Sandburg College business education instructor, and Candy Bryant, CSC adjunct medical instructor, have been named the 2010 Carl Sandburg College Faculty and Adjunct Faculty Member of the year, respectively.

Culbertson and Bryant were chosen by a selection committee based on nominations from CSC students and faculty and will be honored at the spring 2010 commencement ceremony. By being selected as the CSC Faculty Member of the Year, Culbertson will automatically be submitted as CSC's nominee for the Illinois Community College Trustees Association's Outstanding Faculty Member Award.

Culbertson began teaching at CSC in 1999 after teaching at Spoon River College for 12 years. She is a former high school teacher and worked in the business industry for many years.

"I enjoy seeing students progress in their classes, mature and learn," Culbertson said. "Then you see them at graduation and you hear that they got the job they’re trained to do. They're happy and successful. My philosophy is that I'm training people to better their lives through education."

"This award means that the students appreciate the extra time I put in to help them. I feel I’m doing my job correctly," Culbertson said.

Bryant started teaching at CSC's Branch Campus in Carthage in 2007. One of her past instructors asked her to help with the medical assisting program, and she couldn't pass up the chance to help students.

"I love the students, of course," Bryant said. "I love seeing the light go on in their eyes when they get a concept. I take pride in my students. If I'm going to put my name and background on the line, I want to make sure I'm turning out quality students. It's a huge honor, a surprising honor."
