No Solution to Higher Education Funding
The State Board of Higher Education wants the state to pay what it owes, but the board isn't supporting any specific measures.

Don Sevener, deputy director for external relations for the Illinois Board of Higher Education, says new revenue is needed, but says where that money comes from is up to the legislature.

State Sen. Michael Frerichs (D-Gifford) supports a temporary tax increase. He voted against a university borrowing bill during a hearing before the Senate Higher Education Committee, despite reports the University of Illinois could raise tuition by 20 percent next year for freshmen. Frerichs says allowing universities to borrow money would only take pressure off the General Assembly to fix the problem.

Sevener says if the state cannot properly fund universities and colleges, the quality of education is at risk. Frerichs adds that as schools are forced to raise tuition rates, more middle-class families will be unable to afford higher education.
