Democratic State Central Committee Picks Simon
UPDATED 8:07pm 3/27/10 Gov. Pat Quinn got his choice of running mate. A meeting Saturday of the Democratic State Central Committee slated Sheila Simon of Carbondale as lieutenant governor.

The primary winner, Scott Lee Cohen, dropped out a few days after the election after reports of personal problems surfaced. Simon was chosen from more than 200 applicants. Reports of Quinn's preference came out Thursday night.

Simon is a law professor at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. She used to serve on the city council there, and lost a race for mayor. Simon says that experience was helpful in teaching her she must play "hardball."

State Rep. Art Turner (D-Chicago) was the second-place finisher both in the primary and Saturday. Dozens of Turner supporters filled the room, but the weighted votes belonged to the 38 members of the committee. They were weighted by the number of Democratic ballots cast in February.

Simon, Turner, and twelve other hopefuls made speeches at a Springfield hotel. The 13 candidates stood behind Simon as she made her acceptance speech.

Simon is the daughter of the late U. S. Sen. Paul Simon (D-Illinois).

WEIGHTED VOTE TOTALS

Sheila Simon 1,092,845
Art Turner 581,813
Raja Krishnamoorthi 56,999
Dirk Enger 27,733
