Illinois Loses Round 1 of "Race to the Top"
Illinois is reeling from a disappointment: It has lost out on federal money for education reform through the Race for the Top.

Illinois state school superintendent Chris Koch says he's pleased that Illinois ranked fifth, but was surprised that only the top two states would receive money. The two states to win are Tennessee and Delaware. Illinois had applied for a half-billion dollars from the $4.35 billion pot of money.

Koch says the next round of applications will be accepted starting June 1, and he plans to go over the feedback from the federal government, once it arrives, and use it to try to make Illinois' next application more attractive. Koch says Illinois' ranking may have been attributable to the fact that Illinois has a high number of school districts, and therefore has a tougher time changing -- especially quickly -- when trying to implement reform.
